Description

  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Purple, green, and gold sanding sugars or sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Baking Dish: Grease a 9 by 13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  2. Make the Cream Cheese Filling: In a mixing bowl, beat softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and lemon zest until smooth.
  3. Layer the Bread and Filling: Arrange half the bread cubes in the prepared dish, then dollop cream cheese mixture and top with the remaining cubes.
  4. Prepare the Custard Mixture: Whisk together eggs, milk, cream, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until combined.
  5. Soak the Casserole: Pour custard over the bread, pressing down gently, cover with foil, and refrigerate overnight.
  6. Preheat the Oven: Preheat to 350°F and let the dish sit at room temperature.
  7. Add the Cinnamon Topping: Mix melted butter, sugar, and cinnamon, then drizzle over the casserole.
  8. Bake Until Golden: Bake uncovered for 40 to 45 minutes until puffed and golden brown.
